Let’s face it; humans don’t like getting older. But when it comes to our dogs’ birthdays, it’s the perfect excuse for indulgent festivities – without having to reveal how many human years you’re turning. Here are five dogs that had the happiest birthdays ever.

1. Elvis’s Bark Mitzvah

It’s that time of the year again: New York doctor David Best starts planning his parson russell terrier’s birthday, on January 1. Save-the-dates will be sent out by the end of September, with proper invitations following in November and December to 50 lucky guests and their canine companions. Best is digging up around $5,000 for the event, but big doggy spending isn’t a completely foreign concept for Elvis: in 2007, he had his own “bark mitzvah” in a private function room with 100 guests (among them, Elvis’ parents and litter) that set his owner back $10,000. Highlights included Elvis “reciting” the Torah and dancing to Hava Nagila.

2. Alfie Plays Paws the Parcel

Katy Dujardin isn’t afraid to splash out and give her fluffy white bichon frise the birthday party he deserves. Alfie, the four-legged North London resident, spent his 2013 birthday at the Essex Pooch Palace, a “dog hotel” in Basildon. The converted outbuilding hosts “pawty packages” for up for £350 that include birthday cakes, balloons, liver and peanut butter or cheese flavoured doughnuts and cupcakes, pupcorn, “paws the parcel” and a plasma TV playing a marathon of doggy films. Despite Alfie’s canine guests abandoning the “paws the parcel” game early, Katy was confident that her pooch had “a wonderful time.”

3. Minnie's Disney-themed Bash

If you’re going to name your dog after a beloved cartoon mouse, having Disney-themed birthday parties seems inevitable. In June this year, 29-year old fashionista Nikki Cole threw a bash for her labradoodle on the rooftop of Hotel Indigo in Chelsea, New York. The birthday pooch donned a red and white spotty dress and black mouse ears. As well as the killer city views, there was a baby pink Disney cake, party bags filled with dog-friendly treats and toys for the 20 guests in attendance.

4. Salvador & Purdy's "No Expenses Spared" Fiesta

No expenses were spared when it came to celebrating the first birthday of Salvador and Purdy, the pampered chihuahuas of dog lover Helen Turner. Choosing a Mexican theme (to honour the origin of the breed), the two puppies enjoyed clowns, magicians, face painters, balloon artists, piñatas, pin the tail on the chihuahua and senoritas serving dog-friendly canapés. The whole event set Turner back £4,000, but that’s nothing compared to the £24,000 she spends every year on Salvador, Purdy and her six other chihuahuas.

5. Max, Scout & Portia's Annual Pampers & Champers

John Dempsey, president of the Estée Lauder group, believes that throwing a party for your dog doesn’t always have to be a lavish affair. Even so, the annual celebration for his three French bulldogs has become a much-anticipated social event in the calendars of New York’s elite. Most recently, Max, Scout, Portia and six guests were sent to a dog spa on the Upper East Side and later indulged in cake, desserts and champagne with their owners at Dempsey’s residence. Dempsey told the New York Post, “This is another opportunity to celebrate. In a trying world, a little levity is always nice.”
